Custom Closets Are a Work of Art
Are you thinking about designing and building custom closets throughout your home? Many homeowners don’t have the skills necessary to do a professional job. That’s why you should consider using a custom closet service to turn your closets into works of art. Add your personal touches to each one and you will appreciate them for many years to come.
Those of you who live in older homes realize that several decades ago people didn’t want more closets or couldn’t afford to have them incorporated into their house plans. As you know, things have changed. It seems most people today just can’t have enough closet space in the bedrooms, baths, halls, basement or garage. We will review some closet basics to get you started on your way to having nice looking, as well as useful, custom closets in Parkland.
Closet Design Basics for Parkland Homes
Put enough time and effort into designing your closets before you install them so there will be no regrets. Experts typically follow similar design concepts. Start with the total space available. Use all of it. Believe me, you will want it in the future. Shelves: Put shelves at the top of the closet all the way around. This will provide enough space for folded, stacked or boxed items. Put things up there you don’t want children and grandchildren to get into. Make sure they are really sturdy and color coordinated.
Make the space symmetrical by putting drawers or a hutch in the center. This creates a natural divider in the middle of the closet. The logic is that you can move from informal items to more formal items across space. It is psychologically pleasing. Do you want a reach-in or walk-in closets for the bedrooms? Typically, a walk-in is appropriate for the master bedroom and either one for the kids and guest bedrooms.
Mix and match shelves, hutch, double hanging rods, shoe, belt or tie rack to maximize the total floor to ceiling and wall-to-wall space. By using a variety of designs you can both display and store all of your items. Be sure to allow enough depth for clothes rods. You may elect to have a sitting bench and mirror for dressing and putting on socks, stockings, and footwear.
Build enough drawers in the bedroom closets to downsize chest of drawers, dresser, and other storage pieces in your bedroom space. Everything will still be close at hand. Tip: Don’t build shallow drawers. Make them deep enough to provide adequate space for clothing items.
Be sure to include a place for pocket and purse contents. Men will want to empty their pockets and perhaps a briefcase or backpack. Women will want a place to rest their day purse or full-size purse at the end of the day. This will keep your bedroom furniture uncluttered and items out of reach of little hands.
Lighting is important, especially when a bedroom or hallway has limited natural light. Recessed lights look great and do not clutter the ceiling. Lights around the mirror are great when trying on clothes. The color of the lighting should meet your personal needs. Bulbs give off natural light that simulates the sun. A blue or light yellow tone may be to your liking. Places the switches outside the closet space to display the contents well.
Colors should be selected carefully. Current trends lean toward dark and light colors with no medium tones. Some people like a two-tone appearance and others like a single color.
The walk-in closed featured here is all one color. White is still popular and brightens up a closet area when there is limited window lighting. Darker colors need even more lights. Small under-the-shelf lights may appeal to you.
Coordinate the closet colors with your walls, ceilings, and floors for best effect.
