Owning a home is a great experience, but it also requires a lot of work. Each new season brings with it a certain to-do list for homeowners who want to make sure their homes look great. Whether they want to put it on the market or have it look great for their own enjoyment, there are always things that a homeowner can be doing to improve the look of their home. Summer brings its own certain to-do list for working on a home. There are many things a homeowner can do for their home during the summer. Whether they hope to:
- Do some painting to make the house feel more like summer
- Lay down new hardwood, tile, or laminate floors
- Upgrade and organized a closet or two
- Install new kitchen cabinets.
Take a closer look at each of these four ideas to consider taking on one or more of these projects this summer.
Home Improvement in the Summer
Re-Painting a Room
Painting a house is one of the most popular ways of adding value to a home. There are certain colors that work best in the summertime. Bright, intense colors do a better job of absorbing the hot summer sun than more dull colors will. Reds and pinks work great during the summertime for those that want to go for a look like that. Bright blues and greens will work great for the summer as well.
When it comes to painting a room, remember to be careful to avoid any impulsive decisions. While you can always repaint, no one wants to go back and repaint their house four times a year every time the season changes. To begin, do not paint on a humid or rainy day because the paint takes longer to dry under these conditions. Here are some other helpful painting tips:
- Inspect and prepare all surfaces before priming or painting. Scrape and/or sand all old loose paint and follow up with cleaning and rinse the surfaces – walls and woodwork.
- For best results, buy the best quality brushes roller covers, and painter’s tape you can afford. Quality brushes and roller covers provide better coverage so you don’t need to paint the same areas twice. Be sure to match the nap to your walls’ textures.
- Remove light switch and outlet covers and paint around them with a roller.
- Cover furniture, bookcases, appliances, TVs, table lamps, doorknobs and anything else you want to be protected from stray paint with a quality drop cloth. Remember: Paint splatters with a roller when used incorrectly.
- Discuss using separate primer and paint or primer-and-paint combinations with the paint stores consultant. Paint rooms from top to bottom and use an extension pole to reach high places. Paint consistently and evenly so you don’t leave thin areas.

Installing New Floors (Or replacing old ones!)
In the hot Florida sun, there are some flooring options that are going to work better in the summertime. Tile is going to work best, as the stone keeps a room cooler than carpet or wood does. Tile works great in a kitchen or in a bathroom, and some homeowners have used it in the living room as well.
Hardwood and laminate flooring are other options for those trying to get away from carpet or for those that don’t want tile in the living room. Either of these flooring options will keep a room cooler than carpeting will. If you don’t want to bear the cost of real wood, consider high-quality laminate that closely simulates oak, maple, cherry or other wood varieties.
Take on this project if you have the knowledge and skills to do it correctly. If you feel unsure, hire professionals to help you select the materials and install the flooring. Watch this video to help you choose the right flooring for your home.
