3 Types of Modernized Cabinets

“You can understand nothing about art, particularly modern art, if you do not understand that imagination is a value in itself”

Get the polished, present-day appearance desired, by examining all options for modern kitchen cabinets. The term “modern” can mean different things to different people, but if one is interested in the market for modern kitchen cabinets, it probably means they are looking for a sleek, angular, updated look—as opposed to one of the more historical cabinet styles.

In general, modern kitchen cabinets will be characterized by a updated, geometrical design, with less ornamentation and a simpler, “easy on the eyes” look overall. They may also feature bolder, less traditional colors, like deep reds or fluorescent yellows and greens, to help compliment the physical style of the cabinet.

In recent years, modern kitchen cabinet styles have been a reflection of the overall trend toward mid-century modern furniture, often featuring pieces with bold angles and curves.

Another feature of modern kitchen cabinet design is the mixing of materials. Whereas traditional kitchen cabinets are often exclusively wood, modern kitchen cabinets may combine materials like wood, laminate materials, glass and even metal for a far more industrial feel. Here we will explain 3 different types of modern cabinets.

1. Frame-less, full-overlay cabinet construction. A bunch of terms are thrown around to describe this type of cabinet construction: frame-less, Euro frame-less, overlay, full overlay. They all mean the same thing, that the door overlays the cabinet box. This style is the most often used in modern cabinetry because it’s sleeker than a flush-inset cabinet, which is often associated with more traditional cabinet design.

2. Industrial elements. There’s something about the unadorned elements of industrial details that are instantly modern. Untreated, natural concrete has a visual interest and patina all its own and is as interesting as patterned wallpaper for the modernist.

3. Lack of ornamentation. Always a signature of modern, this is often where contemporary and modern stop being similar. Whereas we might see patterned tile shapes or multiple materials with texture, color and patina in contemporary cabinetry, you won’t see much of that in modern cabinetry.

Choosing modern cabinetry is a wonderful way to portray ones yearning for artistic angles, and the need for minimization with home decor, less is always more.
