DIY Ideas for Reusing Old Wood Floor Scraps
While wooden floors are a great investment because of how long they last and how easy they are to maintain, the time will come where you’ll need to get those wooden floors either repaired or replaced. However, when you do repair those planks that may have gotten scuffed, or just worn down, or even if you have extra wood leftover from the new floors you installed, you don’t need to throw them out.
Well treated lumber is hard to come by, and if it’s wood flooring, not only is it well treated, but it’s also finished and lacquered. Therefore, throwing out those extra scraps is just a waste of money when you can utilize it in other DIY ideas and projects.
4 Alternative Uses for Wood Flooring Scraps
-
Doormats
If you have a sheltered area outside, or even in the garage area, you can create a doormat out of your extra scraps of wood. All you need to do is drill uniform holes through the planks, then run string through to hold them together. Since the wood is finished, it won’t succumb to water damage as easily, but that doesn’t mean you should let it sit outside where the rain and other natural elements can get to it.
-
Fashion a cleat
Hanging heavy objects on your walls with just a few nails can be risky because there’s a chance that the nails won’t provide enough support. To avoid this and use up those wood scraps, take two pieces of the flooring that are roughly the same size, then screw one piece into the wall with the grooves facing down. Then, take the second piece and attach it to whatever you’re hanging with the tongue facing upward. This will help lock the heavy object into place without ripping bits of plaster out of your wall.
-
Keep it as a tool
Even if you just have one little scrap, you can keep it to use as a tool around the house for other renovations. For example, if you get new wallpaper, you can use the tongue side of the plank to smooth out any bumps or air bubbles that may have formed within the adhesive. This way, you’re left with a smooth looking wall that may as well have been painted.
-
Create homemade photo frames
One of the easiest things to do with leftover pieces of wood flooring is to create photo frames. Everyone loves a handmade gift, and there’s something about woodworking gifts that really catch someone’s eye. Plus, photo frames come in all different shapes and sizes so you don’t need to have wood that’s any specific length or width, and you can always cut larger planks down.
