What to Consider Before Remodeling Kitchen Cabinets

remodeling-kitchen-cabinets-on-a-budget

When people remodel their kitchen, it’s usually to switch up the interior, create more space for cooking, or to increase the amount of storage space. The kitchen is the one area of the home that has constant foot traffic; therefore you want that area to have plenty of room which means plenty of space to store things so they don’t get in the way. There are roughly 7.5 million homeowners that remodel their kitchens in some way each year with the cabinets being the main focus.

So, here are some things we’ve learned over the years at Alliance Woodworking from building custom kitchen cabinetry that can hopefully help even those of you who are remodeling kitchen cabinets on a budget.

5 Things to Consider when Choosing Kitchen Cabinets

  1. Choose a reliable product.

Buying stock cabinets may seem like the “easy” and affordable option, but good kitchen cabinetry will survive being exposed to humidity, kitchen mainstays (lemon juice, ketchup, coffee, juice, other foods etc.), and not show any blistering, damage, or discoloration. When you choose custom cabinetry, you’re in control of the quality of your cabinets, which includes choosing a lasting finish and wood that will not warp over time.

  2. Consider how much storage you’ll need.

One of the main reasons, as mentioned above, for a kitchen remodel is o create more space for the foot traffic that moves through the area on a daily basis. Therefore, you want to consider how much storage space you’ll need and what will be stored where. When you choose to go down the custom cabinetry route, you’re in control of the size and positioning of where your new cabinets will go, making your kitchen far more functional than it was.

  3. Consider the different types of wood.

If you go with a lighter wood for your cabinets, or even just choose a lighter color in general in terms of painting, it’ll make the space seem larger. If you want to bring the kitchen together from the entry way to the doors surrounding the area, your woodworking company should be able to let you know about door kits and crown moldings that make the room look more whole.

  4. Know that the box and cabinet are two different terms.

So, you have the actual cabinet set, but that cabinet set it composed of boxes. The boxes are what will hold any items that you need to store, therefore you want to choose a sturdy wood that can hold the weight. You don’t want to invest in “boxes” with paper thing walls because even the slightest bit of weight could warp the wood which makes your investment a waste.

Prepare yourself for minor repairs. You don’t need to call a repairman if your custom cabinets need a small repair. If a hinge becomes loose or if you lose a handle, those are things you can fix yourself as long as you have a screwdriver and had our contractor supply you with extra parts. Minor fixes are nothing to be worried about and it doesn’t reflect the quality of your cabinets, it’s just something that happens, especially if the drawers are frequently used, slammed, or just wear overtime.
