Looking to spruce up your kitchen without breaking the bank?  Maybe you’re a new home owner, and just want to make your new home reflect your style. Or does your kitchen already have granite counters, and updated stainless steel appliances, take a look at these simple inexpensive ways to give your kitchen the final touch it needs.

1. Customize your kitchen cabinets with paint

If your cabinets are out dated, this is a quick way to liven them up without breaking the budget.  All you need is some degreaser, sandpaper, a paintbrush, and a little patient. What you don’t need is a whole lot of money, as the transformation will cost you a fraction of what new cabinets cost. The key is to choose the right colors and get to painting.

Here’s a tip: use latex paint. It tends to dry evenly and can be rolled on with a regular paint roller. If you go with a lacquer base you will need to spray on the sealer and sand between each coat.

2. Add a new backslash

With so many different types of material to use, how do you choose which to go with? Granite, limestone, marble and other stone materials are commonly used as backsplashes. What about individual stones? Stone kitchen backsplashes may just be the latest trend to take off.  The look that you can achieve with pebble stone backsplash will be unique to any other. This style of backsplash will take a little longer to install but will be well worth it when you’re finished.

3. Add accent lighting to your cabinets

Something as simple like adding under cabinet lights will add major character to any kitchen. The hidden fixtures of under cabinet task lighting, which are fairly easy to install on the bottoms of the upper wall cabinets. Connect the fixtures to a dimmer switch, and you also have the key to dramatic accent lighting or a night-light. If you’re a bit tentative about working with electricity, don’t worry. This installation is simple and shock-free.  Also you can add accent lights above your wall cabinets. This adds a soft touch to any kitchen.

4. Install cabinet crown molding

Though installing crown molding is not an easy task for most DIY’s, it gives your kitchen an upgraded look without the price tag. The trim transforms your kitchen cabinets into a seamless design. This might require the assistance of a cabinet-maker but do your research there are many great crown molding installation article that will give you a run down on what to expect and what you will need to get the job done.

5. Replace Handles

Invest in new kitchen cabinet hardware. You can instantly update an entire kitchen simply by replacing those dated, handles with something modern, brushed aluminum is in at the moment. Adding or changing out handles on cabinets can add a subtle touch, especially if the existing knobs are looking a bit worn or scratched. Despite what you might think, you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it.  This can be a low-cost way to liven things up a whole lot!
