Step 1 – Establishing a Budget for the Kitchen Remodel
First, you must establish a budget but do not get married to it. By this I mean, there will be decisions to be made down the road where you might have to spend more than originally planned. This amount is usually it is a 5 to 15 percent increase. There will also be times where you will be below your budget, but it varies a lot so it is not to worry much about. Some things that your budget should include are most importantly the kitchen cabinets, your appliances, and any demolition costs (if needed).
Step 2 – Choose a Style for your Kitchen Remodel
Second, what type of style do you want whether contemporary or modern? Although most people decide modern over contemporary, both styles are still used. This is a very important decision because it will determine in which direction your kitchen remodel will go but not much time should be taken into this decision. With contemporary styles you will have the standard raised panel doors and the standard crown where as in the modern style, there are various exotic veneers that you can choose from to have on a flat door and flat step molding. Some veneers like Ebony have grains that run horizontally that you can line up throughout the kitchen that will give it a very unique look because the norm is to have the grains running vertically. Last but not least, the grand decision of whether you will go with pre-made Chinese boxes, kitchens from your neighborhood Home Depot, or a fully custom made kitchen. Personally, I prefer any custom made cabinets because the life span of custom cabinets is longer and not to mention, the quality and durability is incomparable. But mainly, with quality custom cabinets there are no spacing issues meaning they will be unique to your kitchen’s dimensions. No other home in your neighborhood, your county, or maybe even in your city will have a kitchen like yours.
Step 4 – Contracting a Professional Cabinet Maker
Once the planning stage is over, in comes the bidding stage. Supposing you have chosen to go the custom made route, you should contract a professional cabinet maker to come and measure your kitchen and come up with a design specifically made for your kitchen based on your budget and the style you want. Keep in mind that many professional companies will not charge you for the first consultation in which should include a preliminary design and quote. It is also important to know that it is OK to place the first quote on hold in order to shop around to get other quotes to compare.
