The Best Summer To-Do List for a Home

Owning a home is a great experience, but it also requires a lot of work. Each new season brings with it a certain to-do list for homeowners who want to make sure their homes look great. Whether they want to put it on the market or have it look great for their own enjoyment, there are always things that a homeowner can be doing to improve the look of their home. Summer brings its own certain to-do list for working on a home. There are many things a homeowner can do for their home during the summer. Whether they hope to:

Beautiful Open Kitchen Concept

  • Do some painting to make the house feel more like summer
  • Lay down new hardwood, tile, or laminate floors
  • Upgrade and organized a closet or two
  • Install new kitchen cabinets.

Take a closer look at each of these four ideas to consider taking on one or more of these projects this summer.

Home Improvement in the Summer

Re-Painting a Room
Painting a house is one of the most popular ways of adding value to a home. There are certain colors that work best in the summertime. Bright, intense colors do a better job of absorbing the hot summer sun than more dull colors will. Reds and pinks work great during the summertime for those that want to go for a look like that. Bright blues and greens will work great for the summer as well.

Create the Perfect Wall

When it comes to painting a room, remember to be careful to avoid any impulsive decisions. While you can always repaint, no one wants to go back and repaint their house four times a year every time the season changes. To begin, do not paint on a humid or rainy day because the paint takes longer to dry under these conditions. Here are some other helpful painting tips:

  • Inspect and prepare all surfaces before priming or painting. Scrape and/or sand all old loose paint and follow up with cleaning and rinse the surfaces – walls and woodwork.
  • For best results, buy the best quality brushes roller covers, and painter’s tape you can afford. Quality brushes and roller covers provide better coverage so you don’t need to paint the same areas twice. Be sure to match the nap to your walls’ textures.
  • Remove light switch and outlet covers and paint around them with a roller.
  • Cover furniture, bookcases, appliances, TVs, table lamps, doorknobs and anything else you want to be protected from stray paint with a quality drop cloth. Remember: Paint splatters with a roller when used incorrectly.
  • Discuss using separate primer and paint or primer-and-paint combinations with the paint stores consultant. Paint rooms from top to bottom and use an extension pole to reach high places. Paint consistently and evenly so you don’t leave thin areas.

Installing New Floors (Or replacing old ones!)

Install a Durable Floor

In the hot Florida sun, there are some flooring options that are going to work better in the summertime. Tile is going to work best, as the stone keeps a room cooler than carpet or wood does. Tile works great in a kitchen or in a bathroom, and some homeowners have used it in the living room as well.

Hardwood and laminate flooring are other options for those trying to get away from carpet or for those that don’t want tile in the living room. Either of these flooring options will keep a room cooler than carpeting will. If you don’t want to bear the cost of real wood, consider high-quality laminate that closely simulates oak, maple, cherry or other wood varieties.

Take on this project if you have the knowledge and skills to do it correctly. If you feel unsure, hire professionals to help you select the materials and install the flooring. Watch this video to help you choose the right flooring for your home.

Upgrade a Closet or Two

Organizing a Closet

Are you tired of your old cluttered and unorganized closets? Are you wasting time looking for items that result in taking longer to get dressed and ready for work? If your answers are ‘yes,’ it’s time to clean out those closets and add new features that create organization and spaces for the display of clothes and getting dressed. Our craftsmen will help you with:

  • Clothes rods at different heights, shelving, drawers, and bins
  • Bright new paint and adequate lighting
  • A mirror and a seat for putting on socks and shoes
  • Adequate shoe boxes, tie and belt racks
  • Make room for two people to simultaneously use the closets

Bathrooms are thought of as design spaces in today’s homes because they reflect homeowners’ personalities. They’re not longer just a place for showering, brushing your teeth, shaving, and changing clothes. You can design your dream bathroom by creating more space and organization with new closets and changing the faucets, sinks, and light fixtures for a completely new look.

  • Shelving that reaches the ceiling
  • A mirror and a place to sit
  • Enhanced lighting
  • Drawers, bins, and boxes
  • Special needs

The Best Woods for Making Cabinets

There are dozens of woods available for the use in kitchen cabinets, but some have certain strengths that make them the most popular.

Having the right wood is one of the most important parts of designing kitchen cabinets. For a homeowner putting together a new set of kitchen cabinets, one of the most important parts of the process is selecting the type of wood that they are going to use for the cabinets. There are dozens of woods available for the use in kitchen cabinets, but some have certain strengths that make them the most popular.

Some of The Strongest Wood for Cabinets

A homeowner that’s looking for the best kinds of cabinets is going to want to know the best types of wood for making cabinets. From cherry to maple wood, to oak and hickory, there are different kinds that can be used. But not all wood is created equal, and the wood of different trees has different properties.

A few of the most important variables for grading wood are its strength, its resistance to scratches and damaging, and how fade-resistant it is. These are things one needs to know if they are going to make an educated decision on their kitchen cabinets.

Cost-Effective Ways to Increase Your Home’s Value

With the how the housing market goes, homeowners need to know that one of the best things they can do for their home in the year leading up to its sale is increase its value by upgrading the basics. Kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, baseboards; each of these is a perfect example of the little things that can be done to quickly improve the value of a home.

The best part about these investments is that they start paying off immediately. Having new mahogany cabinets can make a kitchen more enjoyable to cook in, and coffered ceilings can completely. Transform an entry-way. Knowing these simple tricks and investments can revolutionize a home’s appeal and aesthetics, to both the homeowner and to any potential buyers.

What Is Millwork?

At Alliance Cabinets & Millwork, we pride ourselves on being able to provide customers with fine, custom-crafted millwork to look beautiful in any home.  However, not everyone knows what millwork is.  In order for you to understand why we’re the best millworkers for the job, you’ve got to understand what it is that we’re doing.

Materials

Traditionally, millwork refers to any woodmill-produced building construction, and woodmill-produced materials are generally what we offer at Alliance.  Over time, however, as cheaper materials have become available, millwork can also refer to building construction made with synthetics, plastics, and wood-adhesive composites.  Even these synthetics, though, are usually combined with some form of wood in order to be considered millwork.

What Is It Used For?

In renovating your home, you may be looking for a lot of changes, and those changes are often matters of millwork.  Millwork is typically used for things like crown molding, baseboard molding, doors, window frames, and wood panelling.  With so many things covered under the blanket of millwork, you can trust Alliance to not only complete one part of your home’s renovation, but many.

Finishes

Because millwork is typically made from woodmill products, it usually comes with a finish.  These finishes come in a variety of colors and shades, and with so much to choose from it can get a little overwhelming.  Our experienced contractors now only know what they’re doing with cabinets and home renovations, but they know what colors work together as well.  A recent trend in millwork finishing in homes has been to have varying colors, though it’s more common to keep your wood finish color consistent throughout your house.

Now that you may have a better idea of what millwork is, you can understand why Alliance is the best woodworking company for your home renovation.  With a wealth of knowledge and possibilities, we can give you the home you’ve always wanted.
